Ewelina W. Pawlik's profile

Northern Lights Observatory

This project is meant to adapt to exceptional lapp conditions and to get more from the outside into the inside, it is located in the rocky area, which comes to grip with shelter and planetarium. Paths and positioning the decentralised objects are independent from the rocky area, which were found interesting by virtue of their form. Path goes through the open forestry space as well as closed objects integrated with the monolithic form and silvery wooden facade "absorbed" by the surrounding.

It induces to genuinely enjoy finnish nature. One of the two entrances to the planetarium leads from the snowy illuminated forest to the shaded "cave". To get inside people need to band, touch the uncovered mossy ground, beneath which stretches an elastic material with projected nightsky. In turn sauna, which is a contemplation room in every shelter, is covered from one side and beneath with the same elastic material used mostly in architecture as a ceiling. Here with the help of heavy snow, water that comes from it and people moving on the ceiling it creates changeable and always unique sculpture and light effects.

On the entrance to every shelter project introduces small fireplace, which creates natural boundry and illuminates entrance slit. Lonely lights in the monolithic facade could create exceptional atmosphere.

The membrane on the roof creates comfortable surface from which guests can observe aurora. The same material is also used in the observatory, in the movable mechanical part of it. Path leading to the observatory wrap the central cylinder, change its direction just to invite to the footbridge, place also destined for the hobbyists and astronomy aficionados, where they can work with smaller personal telescopes.
